this week's soup The photo was the start - the jug on the left contains the remains of last week’s soup; a starter, if you will. The jug on the right contains the water I cooked the broccoli in for Friday night’s stir fry. ... |

and so it ends We finally finished Babylon 5 on Friday night. I loved it, although I found Series 5 a bit disappointing, and the last two episodes positively mawkish.
I shall watch it again next year, to pick up all the bits I missed. |

Exam Post-mortem Well, that's the exam done. I've hit high; how high I'll find out in a couple of months.
The format was as before: eight mandatory short questions for 40% of the overall mark, and two from six longer-answer questions for the other 60%.
I ended up lucky. Of all the questions I had or chose to answer, all bar one of them I could play to my strengths. I probably didn't answer "Explain the principles of Cyclic Redundancy Checking" as well as I could, but that's OK.
I didn't balance my time particularly well. I took around 2 hours - much longer than I should have - to do the short answer questions. This meant that I was somewhat hurried in the longer-answer questions. I left long enough to do the answers I wanted though, so I should be OK.
I have 15 marks out of the 100 to drop and get a Distinction for the course. I didn't need to throw away any in covering questions I just didn't know. The game is on.
I find out around Xmas :) |

credit crunching perlmonger and I have decided that we're going to try to live frugally for a while. We don't spend much on going out but we do seem to get through a lot of cash, and I'm not entirely sure where it goes. So I have started recording what we spend on food, cutting out eating out, books, dvds, clothes, and so forth. I also have two demijohns of home made wine glooping away in he kitchen, but I hadn't realised that fruit wines take about *six months* before you can drink the wretched things, so that's not going to be an instant saving. We started this on Tuesday, and already it's a huge success. Not. We blew 40 quid on a pair of tickets to see the incomparable Richard Thompson in January (well, we had to, didn't we?) and yesterday, despite our very best attempts, we spent 3.70 on two lamb burgers innabun from the very good butchers on Gloucester Road. And i really want to go and get some plants for the hanging baskets. I don't think I'm going to be very good at this ... Still, I'm going to sort out stuff to be eBayed and Freecycled, so we might be clutter-free, at least. |

Minority sport becomes mainstream In the course of researching an article, I found myself looking at the site of the South Florida SunSentinel, a periodical of which I was previously unaware. Although it's not what I came looking for, which was a story about Delta's in-flight broadband internet, I was most impressed by the depth of their coverage of the Olympic Games and allied events - and its popularity. In fact, their photo gallery "Olympic Goddesses" would appear to be the most-viewed on the site. But I hadn't realised that some 95% of all the female competitors in the Olympics were players of beach volleyball. I mean, in my ignorance, I thought even men played it. Huh. Shows how much I know. (The highly-informative pictures of this demanding and skillful sport are work safe, I'd say.) Current Mood: amused |

Nasal Hair One of the traders is worrying about his nasal hair. He has been asking how to get rid of it. (Personally, I would be worried about his BRANE if that's his biggest concern at the moment).
He has had a number of suggestions so far... - It's too small to get a razor up there, so you need to remove the hair the old Greek way. Remember "The Women" by Aristophanes? You need to singe it off. Just take a lighter, get a nice large flame and then briefly snort the flame, as if it was a shot of tequila or something. In fact, you will probably get a better effect if you snort the tequila first, and then snort the flame, because then the tequila will act as a built in astringent (and not like a built-in combustion accelerant, no, not at all).
- Put some glue on the end of a stick, insert in your nose and wait for glue to dry, then yank the stick out as hard (and quickly) as you can. And make sure to have 911 on speed dial just in case.
EDIT Later: "And how exactly am I going to tell the ambulance dispatcher on the other end what's wrong when my entire head is inside out? " "Don't worry, I know the dispatcher, she's probably reading this - I will text her that if she gets a call from a man who sounds as though his head is inside out and on fire, she should send the ambulance here. When she's finished laughing." Edit: Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: Screaming trader |

overnight news from Japan Following the problems in the sub-prime lending market in America and the run on HBOS in the UK, uncertainty has now hit Japan.
In the last 7 hours Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches. Yesterday, it was announced that Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song, while today shares in Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived.
Samurai Bank is soldiering on following sharp cutbacks, Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black. Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal.
Tsunami Bank has been hit by a wave of bad debts, and it is understood That the numbers at Sudoku Bank just don't add up. Satsuma Bank is apparently going to be restructured by being broken up into smaller segments, and rumour has it that Koi Bank has been netted by a major foreign competitor. Meanwhile shares in Judo Bank have been thrown into turmoil and are likely to hit the floor soon following an announcement from Hara-Kiri Bank that it was going into voluntary liquidation. Management at Rickshaw Bank have asked all the staff to pull together to get through this difficult time. Plans for recapitalisation at Kimono Bank remain under wraps.
Further news as we get it.

season of mists and mellow fruitfulness ... ... So my first foray into winemaking begins. I’ve chopped up and boiled the windfalls, and the resultant mush is sitting in a bucket with yeast and sugar, and will be put into a demijohn tonight. It’s really quite exciting! ... |

So, I have done an Ocado order, all by myself! But there are a few things I don't understand. 1) WHY might I like "Spiced Pickled Onions Waitrose" ? The sound arse-renderingly bad. I've never ordered them before. I don't think I have ever ordered ONIONS before. 2) Why, when I search for "Miele" in order to find "Miele hoover bags", does it give me 300 products, NONE of which have ANYTHING to do with Miele. Is there some sort of retarded AI that thinks MIELE is a typo for MEAL ? 3) Finally, it's all well and good for me to choose a "green" van at 11-12am on Saturday to protect the environment as it's already in my area, but it costs MORE than choosing a NON-green van at 12-1pm on Saturday. How can it cost MORE to use a van that is ALREADY in my area, than to have one sent out specially just for me? Makes no sense! In other news, my internet lawyerz are full of win. A question of physics I have a question to test the assembled wisdom herein.
Back in March, I went snowboarding in Chamonix with an old mate of mine from Uni. He's an astrophysics grad and former biker, so he's a smart chap and knows his stuff. (Although he's a skier, not a 'boarder. ;) )
We had a highly entertaining argument spanning several days, with him trying to convince me using reasoning, diagrams and equations. I countered with thought models and so on, but neither could convince the other.
We were talking about motorcycle handling, with reference to trikes, cars and whatnot, but mainly of bikes. What started it was a comment of mine, something along the lines of "of course, on a track, with sticky tyres, you could corner much faster..."
He stopped me. He takes issue with this: he maintains that a motorcycle's cornering speed is limited by its weight and the angle of lean and nothing else; that the maximum cornering speed is a question of the angle of lean.
I maintain that stickier tyres exert more friction on the track, and that thus, a bike on sticky race compound slicks on a dry track covered in Shellgrip or the like will have a higher cornering speed than it would on ordinary tyres on the road.
I can't reproduce his back-of-a-paper-bag physics models on CIX. My models were, for instance, to consider a pendulum going round in circles around a pivot; that a stronger anchoring cord would allow a pendulum of given unit weight to travel faster, the limiting factor being the strength of the tether.
He was happy enough to concede that a car on race compound on the track would corner faster, as it doesn't lean, but as far as he is concerned, this does not apply to bikes.
I think this is ludicrous; that racing bikes on the track corner dramatically faster than one could ever do on the road on Tarmac.
In the end, he got terribly offended and upset that I wouldn't believe him, when his physics degree meant he knew better than I did. I reckon though that his model is faulty for not including friction.
What do the big brains of LJ think? :¬)

"Bigotry doesn't belong in church" Well, no, but if the presence of such comes as any surprise to them at all I can only think that one of London Lite's headline writers hasn't ever been near a place of worship belonging to the majority of the world's major religions. The current crop of organised religions have been around for how many hundred years? Some of them are gradually, grudgingly, starting to accept women. Well, a bit anyway. That they still have a problem acknowledging even the existance of homosexuality (publicly, we'll leave the repressed bits in the closet for now), let alone any kind of actual acceptance can hardly come as a surprise to anyone. (I presume the headline was related to this. This posting has been another in the series 'read the headline but skipped the rest as it would probably just make me cross'.) Current Mood: blah |
